How to Care for Your Hair in the Winter

Writer's picture: Wanda FloydWanda Floyd

During the winter months, it's important to take extra care of your hair to keep it healthy and looking its best. Here are some tips to help you care for your hair in the cold weather:

  • Use a gentle shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for your hair type. This will help keep your hair hydrated without weighing it down.

  • Pre-pooing improves moisture retention in the hair.

  • Avoid using hot tools such as blow dryers, flat irons, and curling irons as much as possible. If you do use them, make sure to use a heat protectant product (leave-in conditioner) and keep them set at a lower temperature.

  • Use a moisturizing hair mask once a week to provide extra hydration.

  • Avoid over-cleansing your hair. Shampooing too often can strip away natural oils and lead to dryness. (Shampooing more than once a week)

  • Use oils like; Avocado, Jojoba, Almond, Grape-seed and butters to seal in moisture.

  • Wear a hat or silk scarf to protect your hair from the cold.

  • Be mindful of the friction that can occur between turtlenecks, wool coats and sweaters.

  • Avoid brushing your hair when it is wet, as this can cause breakage.

  • If in protective styles, cleanse scalp weekly or bi-weekly, drying the hair and scalp thoroughly.

  • Make sure the "type" of hair used for the protective style is safe for your hair. Not all synthetic hair is "one size fits all!"

  • NEVER go outside with wet hair during winter months!

Following these tips will help keep your hair healthy and looking beautiful even in the cold winter months.
